FAQ

Q:    How close should I place the Proscreen™ to my microphone?
A:    For the best results, we suggest two inches between the mic and the
Proscreen™. However, experimentation may reveal that less than two inches may be adequate, or slightly more if the vocalist exhibits long bursts frequently.

Q:    Sometimes I still get pops when I use my
Proscreen™. Is there something wrong with my screen?
A:    It is helpful to understand how the
Proscreen™ diverts bursts of air. With the screen in front of you, with one hand behind the screen, blow into the screen. You will be able to feel airflow directed downward out of the back of the screen. Now, place your microphone out of the path of the airflow.

Q:    I treasure my ribbon mic, and want to protect it. Is the Proscreen™ effective enough to be used with a ribbon mic?
A:    The Proscreen™ is the best way to prevent long term exposure to bursts from damaging a ribbon mic. The lifetime of ribbon mics is consiberably extended by using a Proscreen™. In fact, ribbon mic manufacturers recommend the Proscreen™ for use with their products.

Q:
Can the
Proscreen™ be used for applications other than vocals?
A:    The
Proscreen™ is essential whenever directional air flow into the mic is a problem. It is especially effective in eliminating wind rumble from a rotating speaker, such as a Leslie. The rotating elements of these speakers move a considerable amount of air, which is problematic in close miking.
When miking a bass drum from a hole cut in the front head,
the inevitable rush of air to the mic creates low frequency garbage that prevents capturing the true sound of the bass drum. The Proscreen™ keeps the air from reaching the mic.

Q:   My N90 sounds great but the sensitivity (output level) seems low. Is this normal?
A:   Yes. The N90 cartridge design is a dynamic Alnico/Iron magnet design. While it is efficient, other magnet designs with stronger field strength exhibit higher efficiency. Alnico is the preferred magnet type for studio microphones, speakers and guitar pickups. Alnico yields a very warm, natural sound.

Q:   Does the Stedman N90 require phantom power?
A:   No, the N90 dynamic design does not require phantom power

Q:   If I use the N90 with phantom power turned on, will it effect the sound of the N90?
A:   No, the phantom power needed to operate condenser microphones will not effect the performance of the N90 dynamic microphone.

Q:   On occasions my condenser has made some "static" sounds which later went away. Is there an explanation for this?
A:   You may have had a problem with humidity at the time. Condenser microphones are sensitive to moisture and precautions need to be made when caring for them. While precautions are taken at the factory to prevent moisture from affecting the microphones, extreme conditions must be avoided. Make sure your studio environment is kept at a controlled humidity. This is the best way to ensure good working performance from all of your equipment, including your microphones.
